Quote:
“However ordinary each of us may seem, we are all in some way special, and can do things that are extraordinary, perhaps until then…even thought impossible.” - Sir Roger Bannister

Intro:
Happy Global Running Day! It took a few days to recover from the post-Flying Pig depression, but summer is here! It's 80+ degrees every day this week and it feels like spring weather lasted like 1 day. Gotta love the Midwest seasons. As always, this is a fun transition to shorter races and lots of awesome events. Stay hydrated and make sure to remember that your effort level will be higher regardless! I see too often (even with myself) that I get discouraged if I'm off on paces or feel more tired. This is normal! Your body is working extra hard in this weather, so take an extra water stop, focus on rest and recovery, and give yourself a break!
Also, I want to make a quick note of the quote at the beginning of the newsletter. Roger Bannister, the first to break the 4-minute mile in 1954, shattered what many believed was humanly impossible. His achievement redefined potential and inspired countless others to push their own limits. His words resonate because we all face our own version of "impossible"—whether it's a marathon, a 5K, or even a single mile. His story is a powerful reminder that what seems out of reach today could eventually become your normal routine. Don't let uncertainty stop you from trying; you may be more capable than you ever imagined.
Hope you're a little inspired! Anyways, check out some of what's happening this month below!

Runner Spotlight: Jared Fleming
On May 10th, 2025, Jared Fleming passed away after a long battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Jared was a graduate of Van Wert High School in 2013 and the Ohio State University in 2017. He was an exceptional runner for both programs. In High School, he finished All-Ohio twice at the OHSAA XC State Championships. On the track, he was 6th in the 1600m as a sophomore, champion in the 800m as junior, and runner-up in the 800m as a senior at the OHSAA Track State Championships. He was also a member of a few relay teams for Van Wert that competed at state.

He started his college career at Kent State University, where he would post some very impressive times of 1:50.56 in the 800m, 3:53.06 in the 1500m, and 15:19.32 in the 5000m. During his sophomore year, he would transfer to the Ohio State University. At OSU, he continued to excel in his running. Highlighted with an incredible PR of 1:48.07 in the 800m. He is 5th all-time on the indoor 800m list and 4th all-time on the outdoor 800m list for OSU. He competed in several championship races and secured bronze at the Big 10 Indoor Championships 800m in 2015. Jared collected lots of accolades over a near decade long running career.

Typically, this section of the article highlights a Cincy runner. Jared wasn't from here, but he deserves the spotlight in this episode. He was a friend of mine who left behind lots of close family and friends with his memory. This being a running newsletter, I thought it would be fair to highlight the incredible running career he had. But beyond that, he was a great person as well. To honor him and to uplift the next generation of runners, the Jared Fleming Running Scholarship has been established. A true way to leave a legacy on the running world. Please consider making a donation to the scholarship at the link below:
Cincy Running Historical Moment: Record Breaking Hyde Park Blast
In 2014, the Hyde Park Blast Elite 5k course records were absolutely shattered. After some rain rolled through the area, conditions were primed for a fast evening.

Cleophas Ngetich crossed the line in 14:03, barely edging out Diriba Degefa just one second behind.

One the women's side, Cynthia Limo finished in 15:47. This is nearly a minute faster than the second fastest time ever on the course.

Both of these records will be extremely hard to beat. Last year, the Elite 5k was brought back after a 10 year hiatus. Alec Sandusky crossed the line in 14:37 and Maura Lemon in 17:32. They both won by a wide margin. The race returns on the evening of June 28th! Come out and see how quick the race will be this year. Stay tuned for a more full article on the history of the elite races at the Hyde Park Blast and the full lists of the fastest to ever do it!
Strava Segment Highlight: Amberly Green
Looking for an almost perfect 2 mile loop with lots of hills on an old golf course? Well, I have something just for you. Check out Amberly Green up in Amberly! This is a great spot to change up the scenery and try something different.

Also, just a great spot in general to go for a walk or take the dog out to!
Training Tip:
Throw some uphill strides into your weekly routine. Strides in general are a super easy way to get faster. If you're not familiar, strides are 15-20 second intervals at a fast pace, normally added at the end of a run. You don't want it to be an all-out sprint, but as fast as you can while maintaining proper form and feeling comfortable. Adding in a slight hill to do these on improves your strength and efficiency. Try it out at the end of a run soon, once or twice a week. 4 x 20 second uphill strides with a minute or so rest in between.
